Applications of Static Electricity
Slide 2-

Applications of Static Electricity Grounding: connecting an object to a large body, like Earth, that is capable of removing any excess electric charge on the object
Slide 3-

Applications of Static Electricity Grounding: connecting an object to a large body, like Earth, that is capable of removing any electric charge on the object Negative object: excess electrons flow from the object to the Earth until it is neutral

Paint Spraying
Slide 7-

Summary of Paintspraying The paint is charged as it comes out of the nozzle. The paint spreads out in a spray due to repulsion The car must be connected to the opposite voltage. The paint is attracted to the oppositely charged car. The paint is applied evenly all over

The defibrillator Saving your life!
Slide 9-

In some heart conditions the electrical impulses which are necessary for the proper operation of the heart fall into disorder The heart chambers flutter rather than pulse rhythmically. Little or no blood will be pumped like this so the sufferer is in mortal danger. What is Fibrillation ? Normal heart rhythm Trace showing ventricular fibrillation
Slide 10-

Defibrillation In order to save the life of someone with a fibrillating heart a defibrillator can be used. Electrolyte gel is smeared on electrodes (known as paddles) which are placed on the patients body either Side of the heart. A large voltage is applied across these electrodes to drive a current through the patient’s heart. This current can restore normal heart rhythms. If a persons heart is showing no electrical impulses then defibrillation will not revive them.
Slide 11-

Safety It is important when using a defibrillator that no one touches the patient or any exposed contacts on the defibrillator Clear! Or else they may become the next patient! A big enough electric shock can cause defibrillation.
Slide 12-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Spray Painting: positively charge the object and negatively charge the paint particles opposite charges attract -paint particles are attracted to the object and less is lost as over spray
Slide 13-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Duster: rubbing the duster across a surface causes the duster to become charged by friction.
Slide 14-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Duster: rubbing the duster across a surface causes the duster to become charged by friction. charged objects attract neutral objects
Slide 15-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Duster: rubbing the duster across a surface causes the duster to become charged by friction. charged objects attract neutral objects -neutral dust particles stick to charged duster
Slide 16-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Precipitator: a device to remove dust particles from the exhaust gas from industry
Slide 17-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Precipitator: a device to remove dust particles from the exhaust gas from industry 1. smoke particles pick up a negative charge
Slide 18-

Applications of Static Electricity Electrostatic Precipitator: a device to remove dust particles from the exhaust gas from industry 1. smoke particles pick up a negative charge 2. charged particles are attracted to positive plates 3. clumps of smoke particles collect up on trays and are removed for disposal

Applications of Static Electricity Photocopying: selenium is an insulator but becomes a conductor when exposed to light
Slide 20-

Photocopiers
Slide 21-

How it works A Photocopier uses static charge to apply toner (black powder) to the paper A high voltage charged wire transfers positive charge to the drum
Slide 22-

2. The Drum becomes charged evenly over its whole surface.
Slide 23-

3. Light removes charge from the parts which are not to be printed.
Slide 24-

4. Charge attracts toner particles.
Slide 25-

5. Toner is rolled onto the page
Slide 26-

6. Toner is melted onto the paper.
