Replicative cycle of HIV-1, an example of a retrovirus, showing the sites of action of antiviral agents. Various antiviral agents are shown in blue. Key: RT, reverse transcriptase; cDNA, complementary DNA; mRNA, messenger RNA; Tat, a protein that regulates viral transcription and affects the rate of replication; RNaseH, ribonuclease H; gp120, envelope glycoprotein.

Entry Inhibitors Efuvirtide (T-20) 36-amino acid peptide binds to gp41 viral envelope glycoprotein Resistance can occur but there is no cross resistance Drug administration subcutaneously in combination with other antiretroviral drugs Side effects: Local injection site reaction, hypersensitivity reaction,Eosinophilia Maraviroc binds specifically and selectively to CCR5
