What do we mean by an allergy? Simply speaking, allergy is caused by an abnormal response to our immune system. In allergy the immune system reacts to an often harmless substance in the environment. This substance can be animal dander, certain foods, pollen, mold, dust, insect stings, etc. referred to as an allergen.

Food Allergies Food allergies can appear at any age but are estimated to affect 4%-7% of children, and 4% of adults. Following are the most common type of food allergens: Eggs Milk Peanuts Tree nuts Fish Shellfish Wheat Soy

What Is Meant by An Allergic Reaction? An individual is exposed to an allergen by inhaling it, consuming it, or its contact with the skin. Once a person is exposed, there are events that create an allergic reaction: The body produces an antibody, IgE, to bind the allergen These antibodies attach to a mast cell, found in the airways, intestines, etc. Allergens bind to the IgE, which is attached to the mast cell, which causes the mast cells to secrete different chemicals into the blood such as histmamine. Histamine causes almost all of the symptoms of an allergic reaction

Common symptoms of an allergic reaction to inhaled or skin allergens include: Itchy, watery eyes Sneezing Itchy, runny nose Rashes Feeling tired or ill Hives

Food allergies can cause: Stomach cramps Vomiting Diarrhea Insect sting allergies can cause: Swelling Redness Pain

Diagnosis of Allergy If you have allergy symptoms, an allergist or immunologist is the person who can help with a diagnosis. With the help of an allergist or immunologist, allergy testing can identify the specific allergens that trigger your reactions. There are skin tests, as well as allergy blood tests. Skin tests give fast results and usually cost less. Blood tests are helpful because it only involves a single needle prick. However blood tests cost more. All test results are interpreted with the medical history.

Treatment of Allergy Simply speaking, there are two types of allergy treatment: Medication – Decongestants and antihistamines are the most common. They help to reduce a stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing or itching. Corticosteroids treat inflammation in the nose. Immunotherapy – A preventive treatment for allergic reactions that involves giving gradual increase doses of the allergen. The slow increase of the allergen allows the immune system to become less sensitive to the allergen.

What is Deadly Anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a serious, deadly allergic reaction. Common anaphylactic reactions are to food, insect stings, medications, and latex. As it is deadly, it requires immediate medical treatment, including an injection of epinephrine along with a visit to an emergency room.

Symptoms of Deadly Anaphylaxis Symptoms of this type of allergy usually show within 2-30 minutes of coming into contact with the allergen and may include: Red rash, with hives/welts, usually itchy Swollen throat or areas of the body Wheezing Passing out Chest tightness Trouble breathing Hoarse voice Vomiting Diarrhea Stomach Cramping Pale or red color to the face or body Trouble swallowing

Treating Anaphylaxis The best way to cope up with anaphylaxis is: Avoid allergens in the first place Be prepared for an emergency It is advised that you carry auto-injectable epinephrine, if you are at risk for anaphylaxis.
