The body has several mechanisms to maintain its acid-base balance. One of these mechanisms involves the respiratory system, which regulates the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood. Carbon dioxide is an acid-forming gas, so when the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, the body compensates by increasing the rate and depth of breathing to exhale more carbon dioxide.

Another mechanism involves the kidneys, which regulate the levels of bicarbonate ions and hydrogen ions in the blood. Bicarbonate is a base, so when there is too much acid in the blood, the kidneys excrete more acid and reabsorb more bicarbonate to maintain the bodys pH balance.

Disruptions to the bodys acid-base balance can lead to health problems. For example, acidosis occurs when the body becomes too acidic, which can result in symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, and rapid breathing. Alkalosis, on the other hand, occurs when the body becomes too alkaline, which can result in symptoms such as muscle twitching and tingling sensations.
