About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Pharmacology introduction" by DR NARENDRA KUMAR.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about pharmacology, the study of how drugs interact with living organisms to produce a therapeutic effect. It is a broad field that includes the study of the properties, effects, and uses of drugs, as well as the methods used to develop new drugs.

Some basic concepts in pharmacology include:

Pharmacokinetics: the study of how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted by the body.
Pharmacodynamics: the study of how drugs produce their effects on the body, including the mechanisms of action and the relationship between drug concentration and response.
Drug interactions: the study of how drugs interact with each other or with other substances in the body, including food and other drugs.
Therapeutic index: the ratio between the therapeutic dose of a drug and the toxic dose, which provides a measure of the drugs safety.
Adverse drug reactions: unwanted or harmful effects of drugs, including side effects, drug interactions, and allergic reactions.
Pharmacogenetics: the study of how an individuals genetic makeup influences their response to drugs.
Drug development: the process of discovering, developing, and testing new drugs, including preclinical and clinical trials.

Understanding these basic concepts is essential for healthcare professionals, researchers, and others involved in the use and development of drugs.

These are drugs or biological products for diagnosis/treatment/ prevention of a rare disease or condition, or a more common disease (endemic only in resource poor countries) for which there is no reasonable expectation that the cost of developing and marketing it will be recovered from the sales of that drug. e.g. sodium nitrite, fomepizole, liposomal amphotericin B,, rifabutin,, somatropin, digoxin immune Fab (digoxin antibody), liothyronine (T3) and many more. Governments in developed countries offer tax benefits and other incentives to pharmaceutical companies for developing and marketing orphan drugs (e.g. Orphan Drug Act in USA). Orphan Drugs
