Management of Common Cancers Evidence-Based Approaches to Diagnosis and Treatment Dr. Vineeta Bose Oncologist & Hematologist
Slide 2-

Understanding Common Cancers Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Common cancers include breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, and hematologic cancers. Early diagnosis and tailored treatment are key to improving survival outcomes. Speaker Notes: This presentation will focus on the management strategies for the most prevalent cancers, discussing evidence-based treatment options and advancements. Reference: World Health Organization (WHO). (2021). Cancer Fact Sheet. Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) data.
Slide 3-

Breast Cancer Management Surgery: Lumpectomy, mastectomy. Radiation Therapy: Often used post-surgery. Systemic Therapy: Hormonal therapy (e.g., tamoxifen), chemotherapy, targeted therapy (e.g., trastuzumab for HER2+). Early Detection: Mammograms and genetic testing (BRCA mutations). Speaker Notes: Management is tailored based on cancer subtype, stage, and receptor status (ER, PR, HER2). Multimodal therapy is common in early and advanced stages. Reference: National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines for Breast Cancer (2021). Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group (EBCTCG), Lancet, 2018.
Slide 4-

Lung Cancer Management Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): Surgery for early-stage disease. Targeted therapy (EGFR inhibitors like gefitinib, ALK inhibitors like crizotinib). Immunotherapy (e.g., pembrolizumab for PD-L1+ tumors). Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): Chemotherapy (cisplatin, etoposide) and radiation. Screening: Low-dose CT scans for high-risk populations. Speaker Notes: NSCLC management depends on molecular profiling, while SCLC primarily uses systemic chemotherapy due to its aggressive nature. Reference: Siegel RL et al. (2021). Cancer Statistics, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. NCCN Guidelines for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (2021).
Slide 5-

Colorectal Cancer Management Surgery: Curative for localized disease. Chemotherapy: 5-FU-based regimens for adjuvant and metastatic settings. Targeted Therapy: Bevacizumab (anti-VEGF), cetuximab (anti-EGFR for RAS wild-type). Screening: Colonoscopy and fecal occult blood test (FOBT). Speaker Notes: Colorectal cancer screening and early intervention have significantly reduced mortality. The choice of systemic therapy depends on tumor genetics (e.g., KRAS/NRAS mutation). Reference: NCCN Guidelines for Colorectal Cancer (2021). Van Cutsem E et al. (2016). Management of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer. JCO.
Slide 6-

Prostate Cancer Management Localized Disease: Active surveillance, surgery (prostatectomy), or radiation therapy. Advanced Disease: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), novel hormonal agents (e.g., abiraterone, enzalutamide). Screening: PSA testing and DRE (Digital Rectal Examination). Speaker Notes: For localized prostate cancer, active surveillance may be suitable for low-risk patients. Advanced disease often requires systemic hormonal therapy. Reference: Mottet N et al. (2021). EAU Guidelines on Prostate Cancer. NCCN Prostate Cancer Guidelines (2021).
Slide 7-

Hematologic Cancer Management Leukemia (e.g., AML, CLL): Chemotherapy, targeted agents (e.g., venetoclax, FLT3 inhibitors). Lymphoma (e.g., Hodgkin’s, Non-Hodgkin’s): CHOP, ABVD regimens, CAR-T cell therapy. Multiple Myeloma: Proteasome inhibitors (e.g., bortezomib), immunomodulators (lenalidomide). Speaker Notes: Treatment in hematologic malignancies often integrates targeted therapies and immune-based approaches like CAR-T cells, especially in relapsed/refractory cases. Reference: Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (2021). Palumbo A et al. (2016). Treatment of Multiple Myeloma. NEJM.
Slide 8-

Advancements in Cancer Management Immunotherapy: CAR-T cells, bispecific T-cell engagers (BiTEs). Precision medicine: Liquid biopsies, tumor genetic profiling. Combination therapies: Immunotherapy with chemotherapy or targeted agents. Speaker Notes: Emerging therapies like CAR-T cells and precision oncology are transforming the cancer treatment landscape, offering personalized and effective solutions. Reference: Chan TA et al. (2019). Advancing Cancer Precision Medicine. Nature Reviews Cancer.

Key Takeaways Cancer management is increasingly personalized based on genetic profiling. Multimodal therapy is essential for optimal outcomes. Ongoing research is continuously improving survival and quality of life. Speaker Notes: Comprehensive cancer care relies on early detection, personalized treatment, and the integration of novel therapies to achieve the best outcomes for patients.
