About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Human Genetics and Pedigrees”.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about human genetics and pedigrees which is important for understanding the inheritance of traits and genetic disorders, as well as for developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to manage and treat these conditions.

Human genetics is the study of genetic inheritance in humans, including the identification and analysis of specific genes and their effects on physical and behavioral traits. One important tool used in human genetics is the pedigree, a diagrammatic representation of a family tree that shows the inheritance of traits over multiple generations.

A pedigree typically includes symbols to represent individuals, with males represented by squares and females by circles. Relationships between individuals are shown with connecting lines, and the presence or absence of a particular trait is indicated by shading or other markings within the symbol.

Pedigrees can be used to track the inheritance of a particular genetic disorder or trait within a family, and can help to identify the underlying genetic cause of the condition. For example, if a particular trait is found to be inherited in a pattern consistent with dominant inheritance, it may suggest that the gene responsible for the trait is located on one of the autosomes (non-sex chromosomes) and that a person with one copy of the gene will express the trait.

Slide 1-

KEY CONCEPT A combination of methods is used to study human genetics.
Slide 2-

Human genetics follows the patterns seen in other organisms. The basic principles of genetics are the same in all sexually reproducing organisms. Inheritance of many humantraits is complex. Single-gene traits areimportant in understandinghuman genetics.
Slide 3-

Females can carry sex-linked genetic disorders. Males (XY) express all of their sex linked genes. Expression of the disorder depends on which parent carries the allele and the sex of the child.
Slide 4-

A pedigree is a chart for tracing genes in a family. Phenotypes are used to infer genotypes on a pedigree. Autosomal genes show different patterns on a pedigree than sex-linked genes.
Slide 5-

If the phenotype is more common in males, the gene is likely sex-linked.
Slide 6-

Several methods help map human chromosomes. A karyotype is a picture of all chromosomes in a cell. X Y
Slide 7-

Karyotypes can show changes in chromosomes. deletion of part of a chromosome or loss of a chromosome large changes in chromosomes extra chromosomes or duplication of part of a chromosome
