What Is Childhood Trauma? National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and psychologist define a traumatic event as any scary, violent or dangerous event that poses a threat to the physical safety, well-being, or bodily integrity of children. Sometimes, traumatic events might directly involve the child. At different times, the event involves the guardian, parent, or another caretaker. Threats to the physical safety of a loved one might be just as traumatic as direct threats to children. These experiences can provoke or trigger strong emotional and physical responses, which can remain long after the event passes. Some children develop child-traumatic stress: a visceral response to childhood trauma that will affect their daily life and emotional well-being for long years or even decades after the triggering event.
