About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Diagnostic Cytopathology & Significance of Biopsy Investigation" by Jaroslava Dušková.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about diagnostic cytopathology and biopsy investigation.

Diagnostic cytopathology is a medical specialty that involves the microscopic examination of cells collected from various parts of the body, such as the skin, organs, and fluids. This examination is performed to diagnose and treat diseases, including cancer. The examination of cells can help to determine whether a growth is benign or cancerous, and if it is cancerous, what type of cancer it is.

Biopsy investigation is another important tool for diagnosing and treating diseases. A biopsy involves removing a small amount of tissue from a suspicious area in the body, such as a lump or a mole. The tissue is then examined under a microscope to determine whether it is cancerous or not.

Both diagnostic cytopathology and biopsy investigation are significant in diagnosing and treating diseases, including cancer. They can help physicians make accurate diagnoses and provide appropriate treatment options. These tests are often used together to provide a more complete picture of a patients condition.

It is important to note that both diagnostic cytopathology and biopsy investigation are invasive procedures that can have potential risks and complications. Patients should discuss these risks with their healthcare provider before undergoing any testing or treatment. Additionally, it is important for patients to follow up with their healthcare provider and attend any recommended appointments and follow-up testing to ensure proper management of their condition.

Cytology (FNAB) often both first and final dg. method outpatient low cost procedure done by an experienced (cyto)pathologist surprisingly effective has some limits (!)
Slide 8-

CYTOLOGY IS VERY EFFICIENT IN EARLY NEOPLASM DIAGNOSTICS
Slide 9-

ESPECIALLY, IF CLINICO-MORPHOLOGICAL COMMUNICATION WORKS
Slide 10-

Expectations Clinician from his pathologist: confirmation of neoplasm dg. nosological classification grading, staging prognosis reaction to the therapy recidive recognition
Slide 11-

Expectations Pathologist from his clinician: information: local.,size, duration, former dg. a treated neo, clin. dg. diagnostic material acquisition correct interpretation of the pathologist´s report
Slide 12-

Getting Cytology Material surface – smeared, brushed, scraped cavities – punctured, aspirated deep solid lesions - aspirated
Slide 13-

Processing Cytology Material smears cytospins, cytosedimentation cytoblock
Slide 14-

Minibiopsy - Cytoblock from FNAB advantage of easy material taking together with more tissue architecture information histology &, immunohistochemistry methods available multilayered tissue phragments readable
Slide 15-

Cytology Material Staining gynecology smears - polychrome other materials –MGG, HE, polychrome, all other methods cytoblock – multiple methods
Slide 16-

Goals of Cytological Investigation Screening – detection of symptomless lesions Diagnosis of pathological lesions found introductory (followed by histol.) final

Cytology getting sample needle 0.6-0.8mm min. 2 punctions aspiration nonaspiration – reduction of the blood content cyst: evacuate and aspirate with the second punction the periphery fluid: whole volume for cytology
Slide 29-

Peroperation Biopsy dg. during minutes morphological artefacts (combination with cytology) limited extensity of investigation limited time
Slide 30-

„Classical“ Biopsy (formol paraffin technique) simple may be done in two days immuno reactions two days more further sectioning two days more oncol. dg. - WHO classification typing, grading, staging prognostic factors
Slide 31-

Biopsy any tissue removed from a living patient is a COMPULSORY subject to do not follow the tendency to discard „unimportant“ materials (nevi, tonsillae, uteri, intestine, endometrial curretage…..) !
Slide 32-

Biopsy do not crush small samples taking imprint cytology !!! adequate amount of fixation solution (sample: fixative = min. 1:10) wide neck bottle tightly closed for transport but openable without rough violence flat sample – spread and tighten on a bearing socket mark discrete suspicious lesion with a stitch before fixation
