About This Presentation

Description : Cardiac Care Surgical Interventions refer to medical procedures designed to treat various heart conditions through surgery. These interventions are often necessary when medication and lifestyle changes are insufficient to manage cardiac issues. Common surgical treatments include: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): This procedure improves blood flow to the heart by creating a new pathway for oxygen-rich blood to bypass blocked arteries. Heart Valve Repair or Replacement: When heart valves fail to function properly, they may be repaired or replaced with artificial or biological substitutes. Pacemaker and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Placement: These devices regulate heart rhythm and prevent life-threatening arrhythmias. Aortic Aneurysm Repair: If the aorta develops a dangerous bulge, surgical repair prevents rupture and serious complications. Minimal

Introduction Cardiac surgical interventions are essential in managing various heart conditions that cannot be adequately treated with medications alone. These procedures aim to restore normal heart function, improve blood circulation, and prevent life-threatening complications. Surgical interventions range from open-heart surgeries to minimally invasive catheter-based procedures, each tailored to the patient's specific condition.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs due to the narrowing or blockage of coronary arteries caused by atherosclerosis. This condition leads to reduced oxygen supply to the heart, increasing the risk of angina, heart attacks, and heart failure. Surgical interventions for CHD include coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), angioplasty, and stent placement. Coronary Heart Disease Valvular heart disease affects the heart valves, leading to stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage). Surgical treatments include: Valve repair – Restoring the function of damaged valves. Valve replacement – Using mechanical or biological prosthetic valves. Transcatheter valve procedures – Minimally invasive techniques for valve repair or replacement. Valvular Heart Disease

Rhythm Disorders Cardiac rhythm disorders, such as atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and heart block, may require surgical interventions when medications or catheter-based treatments fail. Procedures include: Pacemaker implantation – Regulates heart rhythm. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) – Prevents life-threatening arrhythmias. Catheter ablation – Destroys abnormal electrical pathways in the heart.

Bypass Surgery Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is performed to reroute blood flow around blocked coronary arteries using grafts from the patient's veins or arteries. It is indicated for patients with severe coronary artery disease or multiple blockages. Indications for Surgical Interventions Surgical interventions are recommended when: Medications and lifestyle changes fail to control symptoms. Severe artery blockages threaten heart function. Valve dysfunction leads to heart failure. Life-threatening arrhythmias require correction.

Catheter Interventions Catheter-based interventions are minimally invasive and include: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) – Angioplasty and stenting. Electrophysiology studies and ablation – Treats arrhythmias. Transcatheter valve procedures – Repairs or replaces heart valves.

Atherectomy is a specialized procedure that removes plaque buildup from arteries using a rotating catheter. It is used when angioplasty alone is insufficient. Atherectomy Stents are small mesh tubes inserted into arteries to keep them open after angioplasty. They can be drug-eluting (coated with medication) or bare-metal. Stent Placement Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure where a balloon catheter is used to widen narrowed arteries. It is often combined with stent placement to maintain blood flow. Angioplasty
