About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Brain Scans”.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about brain scans, a set of medical imaging techniques used to create images of the brains structure, function, and activity. These scans can help doctors and researchers better understand the brain and its workings, identify abnormalities or damage to the brain, and aid in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders and diseases.

Some common types of brain scans include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI).

Structural scans: Showing what the brain “looks like.”

CAT/CT – Computerized Axial Tomography http://www.postmortemstudiorental.com/images/x-ray/cat%20scan%20brain%209.JPG http://neurocog.psy.tufts.edu/images/cat_scan.gif Computers combine many X-ray images

MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging Computers measure magnetic fields given off by various structures. http://pharyngula.org/images/aspm-mri.jpg http://gamma.wustl.edu/pt089mr413.gif

Functional scans: Showing how the brain “acts.”
Slide 7-

PET – Positron Emission Tomography Measures and images brain activity by using subatomic particles and “guessing” where they’re going to go next. Uses radioactive glucose to chart activity. Often looks at tumors. http://www.mssm.edu/psychiatry/images/petimg.gif
Slide 8-

EEG - Electroencephalogram Measures and images electrical discharges in the brain. http://www.bsp.brain.riken.jp/Photos/EEG%20Acquisition%20-%20%2064-QuickCap% http://www.ant-software.nl/images/eeg-pain_small.gif
Slide 9-

fMRI – functional MRI Measures and images the brain using repeated MRIs paired with radioactive chemicals, then “guesses” the brain’s activity using computer models. This is what “tapping an index finger” looks like on an fMRI.
