About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Basic Airway Management" by Dr Nishith Govil.

This medical PowerPoint presentation talks about airway management which refers to the set of interventions that are used to establish and maintain a patients airway, which is essential for effective oxygenation and ventilation. Basic airway management involves techniques that can be used in emergency situations to maintain a patients airway and breathing until more advanced medical care can be provided.

Some basic airway management techniques include Head tilt-chin lift maneuver, Jaw thrust maneuver, Bag-mask ventilation, Oropharyngeal airway (OPA), and Nasopharyngeal airway (NPA).

It is important to remember that basic airway management techniques are only a temporary measure and more advanced medical care should be sought as soon as possible. Additionally, these techniques can be potentially dangerous if not performed correctly, and therefore, should only be performed by trained medical professionals.

Anatomic considerations in children Prominent occiput Small mouth opening Large tongue, tonsils and adenoids Superior laryngeal position Weaker hyoepiglottic ligament Large, floppy epiglottis Shorter trachea Anatomic subglottic narrowing

PHYSIOLOGIC CONSIDERATIONS Age-related high respiratory rate Periodic breathing and Apnoea Preferential nasal breathing Smaller tidal volumes relative to body size (6 to 8 mL/kg) Lower functional residual capacity Higher oxygen metabolism: (6 versus 3 mL/kg/min) Prone to respiratory fatigue: lower percentage of type 1 muscle fibres Higher vagal tone
